Nearly every ECN broker now advertises a free VPS. The offer is real, the servers are usually decent, and for the right trader it is genuinely the best deal available. But "free" in brokerage always has a mechanism behind it, and the mechanism is worth understanding before you build your infrastructure on it.
How broker free VPS offers work
The conditions come in two flavours, sometimes combined:
- Minimum balance. Keep at least a stated amount in the account, and the VPS is included. This is the benign version: if you were going to hold that balance anyway, the VPS is a pure rebate.
- Minimum monthly volume. Trade at least a stated number of lots per month, or a fee appears. This is the version that deserves attention, because it ties your infrastructure to your activity level.
The business logic is straightforward and not sinister: brokers earn from spread and commission on volume, a VPS costs them a few dollars a month at data-centre scale, and a trader whose EA runs 24/7 without disconnects trades more reliably than one on a home laptop. Everyone can win here. The question is only whether the conditions match how your system naturally trades.
The math that decides it
A paid forex VPS costs roughly $15 to $35 per month. That is the entire stake. So the free VPS is worth taking when your normal trading already satisfies the conditions, and worth refusing when it does not, because the alternative cost is small and fixed.
The failure mode is subtle: a volume requirement your system meets in active months but misses in quiet ones. Markets go through low-volatility stretches, and a disciplined system responds by trading less. Our own systems have months with a fraction of their average trade count. If a volume condition makes you even slightly reluctant to let the quiet months be quiet, or worse, tempts you to bump the risk setting to keep the volume up, you are paying for the VPS with something far more expensive than $25: deviation from the system. A note on quality and control
Broker VPS plans are typically entry-level configurations: adequate RAM for one terminal, shared hardware, and no choice of location (though the broker naturally places them near its own servers, which handles the latency question automatically). For running one account with a finished, stable EA, that is enough. If you run multiple terminals, test builds, or anything beyond MT5 itself, a paid server you fully control is the better tool.
Our position
We run our live account's EA on a paid VPS we control, in the same New York facility as our broker's servers, because multi-terminal flexibility and full desktop access are worth more to us than the saved fee.
